Kaktus Copiapoa echinoides je endemický v Chile, podél pobřeží od severu Huasco až 50 km do vnitrozemí v oblasti Atacama, kde se vyskytuje v nadmořských výškách 0 až 500 metrů nad mořem. Roste v pobřežních kopcích (lomas costeras), na relativně kompaktních a skalnatých půdách. Oblast je extrémně suchá s velmi vzácnými srážkami. Období sucha trvá 8 - 12 měsíců a v některých letech je možné, že srážky nejsou vůbec žádné. Srážky méně než 100 mm/rok. Vodu rostliny získávají především z kondenzace pobřežní mlhy (camanchaca). Má zploštělý kulovitý tvar s vlněným vrcholem, zelenou až nahnědlou epidermis, statnými kaštanovými nebo černými ostny, obvykle mírně zakřivenými nahoru a světle žlutým květem. Může být osamělý nebo obvykle tvoří husté shluky. Tento druh je blízce příbuzný Copiapoa marginata. Stonek prohloubeně kulovitý až kulovitý, 7 - 18 cm v průměru, velmi pevný, zelený, někdy nahnědlý a na vrcholu vlnitý. Pouze v pěstebních rostlinách může mít protáhlý až sloupcovitý tvar. Žebra 11 - 17, rovná, zaoblená nebo zkrácená. Areoly nažloutlé, se stářím šednou, 2 - 10 mm od sebe. Ostny hnědočervené až černé, silné, rovné až poněkud vzhůru zahnuté.
